Full Show Notes

This week begins with an update for the Affiliate Marketers Give Back charity project we’re doing with Jim Kukral’s Attention! book. As of the time of this writing, the book is either with Chris Brogan or on its way back. Depending on how many more signatures we can secure, the auction may be happening in time for the holidays, which would be a great present for the organization.

Drew gives us the rundown of the Modern Media Man conference that he’s attending later this week, including details of his session, which leads into a broader discussion of industry conferences.

Apple had their event recently, announcing the new iPod line-up, the Apple TV and iTunes 10. We cover a bit of photography with HDR on the iPhone 4 and the new Ping service.

We talk about one of our favorite podcasts, Sarcastic Voyage. Hi, Aal. Hi, Matt. Go check them out, they’re awesome.

Next up, Affiliate Summit and the session that two of your Geek Dads are planning. We’ll have more details about that as we get closer to the session submission deadline, but basically, it’s an improv session that will take suggestions from the audience and build ideas around them.

[Additional show notes forthcoming. Kids. What can you do?]

I've been wanting to learn how to play the guitar for several years. It and the piano are in my list of instruments to pick up. I've been trained in several wind instruments, but purchasing my own tuba would cost quite a pretty penny, so I've been inactive for several years on that front.

Over the past few years, I've done what I can to scratch the itch using music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It actually works decently well in some regards — and I've become quite the fake plastic rockstar — but it's still not quite there.

My wife and I own a couple of guitars. She has her acoustic, and I have my electric. She bought me this beautiful Fender Squire for Christmas in 2008. It got me really jazzed to follow through with the learning. I also have a Mac and went and downloaded the Garageband tutorials. However, the little device I picked to hook up my guitar to my Mac wound up not working so well with Garageband, and left me in a bit of a lurch.

Unfortunate, I struggle to find the time for professional training. I'd really like to do it, but too many things eat my time. However, a course such as this would work wonderfully for me. I've done similar sorts of things with other instruments, and while I'm not as active as I could be, I can still play my didgeridoo fairly well because of it.

So, I can rock the didge and the plastic axe, but I think it's time I really worked on mastering an actual guitar. It'd be pretty sweet to bust out a crazy solo in Rock Band, then get my actual guitar and do it again. :D

I would like to learn how to play the guitar because neither me nor my wife are musical people but I see that many creative people are musical and I would love to be able to play and sing with my daughter. I'd really like to play many of the fun kids songs that are out there as well as songs that I love. I'd also like to be able to be at a party and whip out the guitar and have everyone sing along. I was always envious of those guys in college.
